About Dr. Jade Guerra
Dr. Jade Guerra, FNP, APRN, DC, DABCO, has been in practice since 1992. Her training combines chiropractic care, nursing, functional medicine, clinical nutrition, blood chemistry, brain neurotransmitters, and thyroid health. She works with people experiencing chronic health challenges such as Type 2 diabetes, hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s disease, and autoimmune conditions.
Her approach is centered on investigating why the body is not functioning properly and identifying the individual factors that may be contributing to illness. Depending on the person, this may involve laboratory testing, nutrition, targeted supplements, lifestyle changes, environmental considerations, and collaboration with the patient’s prescribing healthcare professionals.
Key Takeaways
- Type 2 diabetes develops over time. A diagnosis may occur after metabolic dysfunction has been progressing for years.
- Symptoms are clues. Functional medicine uses symptoms and testing to investigate underlying contributors rather than viewing the diagnosis as the entire problem.
- Thyroid testing may require a broader view. Dr. Guerra discusses looking beyond TSH and considering the gut, liver, brain, adrenal function, blood sugar, inflammation, and autoimmune activity.
- Environmental exposure matters. Mold, metals, pesticides, plastics, household products, and other environmental factors may add to a person’s total burden.
- Detoxification should be approached carefully. Aggressive cleanses may cause problems when the liver, bowels, and other elimination pathways are not functioning properly.
- Personalized plans outperform guesswork. People with the same diagnosis can have very different laboratory patterns, exposures, obstacles, and nutritional needs.
- Daily preparation makes healthier choices easier. Meal planning, keeping quality snacks available, checking restaurant menus in advance, hydration, movement, and sleep routines can reduce reliance on convenience food.
- “Normal” is not always the same as optimal. Reference ranges can be useful, but they do not always explain why someone still feels unwell.
- Mindset affects behavior. Words, thoughts, gratitude, meditation, and visualizing the person you want to become can support consistent health choices.
Type 2 Diabetes: Diagnosis or Symptom?
One of the central ideas in this episode is that Type 2 diabetes should not be viewed only as a blood sugar problem. Dr. Guerra describes it as the downstream result of multiple factors that can accumulate over time, including nutrition, inflammation, sleep, stress, environmental exposures, hormonal dysfunction, liver health, gut health, and a person’s ability to detoxify.
The goal is not to ignore blood sugar or medication. Instead, it is to ask a deeper question: What is causing the body to lose its ability to regulate blood sugar properly? Dr. Guerra explains that when the contributing factors are identified and addressed, some patients may improve their metabolic health enough for their prescribing clinician to reduce medications. Any medication changes must be supervised by the qualified professional responsible for the prescription.
Why Thyroid Symptoms Can Persist Despite “Normal” Tests
The discussion then turns to hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s disease. Dr. Guerra explains that many patients receive only a TSH test, even though thyroid metabolism depends on multiple systems throughout the body. She describes a complete thyroid evaluation as a broader investigation that may include thyroid markers, autoimmune markers, blood sugar regulation, inflammation, liver function, adrenal function, gut health, and other patterns.
This whole-body perspective helps explain why two people with the same diagnosis may need very different plans. One person may be dealing primarily with autoimmune activity, while another may have poor conversion of thyroid hormones, liver dysfunction, blood sugar problems, environmental exposures, or several overlapping issues.
Environmental Toxins and the Body’s Total Burden
Dr. Guerra also discusses urine testing for mold-related compounds, metals, and environmental toxins. The conversation explores possible exposures from agricultural chemicals, plastics, household products, personal-care products, mold, and other sources encountered at home or work.
Reducing exposure is only one part of the process. The body must also be able to process and eliminate what has already accumulated. Dr. Guerra cautions listeners against starting aggressive detoxification or parasite-cleansing programs without guidance, particularly when bowel function, liver pathways, or other elimination systems may already be compromised.
Foundational Habits That Support Better Health
Although testing and targeted interventions receive significant attention, many of the most practical lessons in this episode involve everyday habits. Dr. Guerra recommends planning meals before the week begins, keeping quality protein and snacks nearby, reviewing restaurant menus in advance, drinking enough water, protecting sleep, and creating an environment that makes healthy choices easier.
Dr. Haley and Dr. Guerra also discuss chiropractic care, stretching, red-light therapy, infrared sauna, grounding, electrolytes, exercise, and finding sustainable routines. The recurring message is simple: people often spend their lives caring for everyone else, but health improves when they decide that caring for themselves is also a priority.

0:00 — Dr. Guerra celebrates a patient’s success
am always thrilled when I get to tell someone that they’re no longer diabetic, that their doctor needs to get them off of these medications that place them on, you know, that’s the best day that I have is when someone reaches their goal and they are no longer tied to the disease, and now they have the tools they need to keep this problem under control.
0:23 — Welcome to The Dr. Haley Show
You are listening to the Dr. Haley Show, the podcast dedicated to helping you optimize your health. Each episode there will be an interview or a message to help you discover better health. We will be featuring health radicals on the show to bring new ideas to the table, as well as doubling down on key fundamentals to support you living your best life. Your host is no other than the founder of Haley Nutrition Dr. Michael Haley. This is the Dr. Haley Show podcast. I’m Dr. Michael Haley, your show host. And today’s guest is Dr. Jade Guerra, a health care practitioner with nearly 35 years of experience helping people improve their health through natural and integrative approaches. Dr. Guerra brings a unique combination of training to her work.
She is both a doctor of chiropractic. My favorite kind of doctor happen to be a chiropractor myself, and a family nurse practitioner with advanced education in functional medicine, blood chemistry, brain neurotransmitters, and thyroid health.
0:51 — Introducing Dr. Jade Guerra
Her work focuses on identifying the underlying factors that contribute to chronic health problems, including Type 2 diabetes, hypothyroidism, and autoimmune conditions. Sound familiar? We’ve talked a lot about those things, rather than simply addressing symptoms. She helps patients use nutrition, targeted supplements, and lifestyle changes to restore balance and take a more active role in their health. Dr. Guerra, by the way, is also host of the five-day diabetic to Non-Diabetic Masterclass.
2:10 — Free diabetes and thyroid masterclasses
Dr. Guerra, thank you for joining me today. I saw the masterclass. How much is the masterclass? Nothing. Zero. The best deal you get today. Zero. Nada. And right now people might leave the podcast might not even listen if I say where it is, but they can go to your website, which is what. So we have this on Facebook. So we have a Facebook group so they can join the webinar or the five-day masterclass vs Facebook. Joining our group which is called The End Of Type 2 Diabetes NOW! they can join via zoom. So they just need to register for the class to get the zoom link. So we do a masterclass about every other month and then about every month. I also do a masterclass on low thyroid and Hashimoto’s.
I saw a web link JadeGuerra.com linking to the masterclass. I actually tried the Facebook and it would not not let me use that page. Visit that page for some reason. So if it’s all right, I’ll have links to both. Sure, maybe we’ll get the corrected Facebook link. And I didn’t want to announce the price because I thought, no, it can’t be free. Everyone can benefit from this. This is great. No, it’s that we try to compact information as much as we can fit in five-days. And it is so much information where we can’t fit it all in five-days. So we actually have bonus sessions as well.
But we really want to pull back the curtain and give people the information that just not getting from the internet, from TV or, you know, all the news channels that they need to know as to why they’re sick and not feeling well and on all these meds. I like the one. And, you know, you mentioned
3:53 — Can Type 2 diabetes be reversed?
the two different masterclasses, but I like the one that said diabetic to Non-Diabetic just because a lot of people think, no, you have diabetes and, you know, you take medications or you manage it for the rest of your life. And a lot of people don’t realize that diabetes is reversible. Absolutely. I see it happen each and every day. I am always thrilled when I get to tell someone that they’re no longer diabetic, that their doctor needs to get them off of these medications that place them on, you know, that’s the best day that I have is when someone reaches their goal and they are no longer tied to the disease, and now they have the tools that they need to keep this problem under control. Yeah.
Now, I saw that you’re in Texas. Are you still there? Are you there now? I’m actually in central Texas now, so down by Austin. Okay. And I have a feeling our paths have crossed before somewhere. Okay. And I wondering, did you go to a Weston A. Price conference in Texas in Dallas, Texas, one time? What was it called? No, probably not Weston A. Price that was a well, it’s a, you know, diet that’s focused on, traditional foods for the most part. And where did you go to school? Chiropractic School. Went to Parker. To Parker. Okay. So it wasn’t there either, possibly at one of the big conventions.
You know, when you popped up in my feed regularly again, I thought, I know this person, and maybe it’s just from seeing you on.
5:27 — The pioneers who influenced Dr. Guerra
Well, you’ve got a big YouTube channel, bigger TikTok and bigger Instagram channels. Yeah, I’m sure we crossed paths. Probably one of the conventions here or there. What are your influences when it comes to diet? Who do you follow? Where’d you, you know? Who do you most agree with? I should say? Well, I mean, I learned functional medicine, which is what we call this I had the privilege of learning this from the greats like Jeffrey Bland and Datis Kharrazian. These people really spearheaded functional medicine. They’re forefathers of functional medicine. So I learned quite a bit from all of them. And continuing. Education is always important. It’s understanding, okay, we need to eat to keep our bodies healthy and not the other way around.
So it’s always looking at things that we can do to not only just food, but what things that we can do to keep our bodies healthy, like infrared sauna or red light therapy. Or now peptides is a big thing that people are talking about. But all these things that are available that people may not even have a clue about, that are available to. So
6:36 — Taking responsibility for your own health
you can be in control of keeping your body healthy. Yeah. And we need to do this more often. I’ve been slipping and I don’t know if you’ve ever gotten into this pattern. I haven’t been to the chiropractor forever. I, you know, I’ve been so dang busy taking care of other people that I just kind of shut myself aside, and I didn’t even do my stretches anymore. Now, finally, yesterday, I got to the point and it seems like I’m all in all of a sudden all again. Yesterday I got to the point. It’s like, Mike, you got to take care of yourself and people listening. You got to take care of yourself. And I have a feeling we’re going to talk about some great things on this podcast.
But if anything, I think in this conversation, you’re going to be inspired to take action and get back to doing the things that you used to do or that you always known you should do. But yesterday I finally went to the chiropractor and rather than just getting an adjustment, I started with getting a massage because I needed it. I haven’t, you know, I’m my whole thoracic are just kind of locking up and they’re not even adjusting anymore. I let them get old and it’s time to reverse that. I filled up my cold plunge, and that’s going to be ready for me today when I get home. And this morning, instead of just sitting on the couch watching the news and start my day with my coffee, I do drink coffee.
Is that a sin? Oh, just the right coffee. Well, it’s organic and it has the creamers. Kind of a homemade creamer out of, you know, coconut milk. I use a little stevia and a vegan protein that I like. It kind of tastes like a Frappuccino. It’s delicious. And then I have my aloe vera. But instead of just sitting on the couch, I got on the floor and I started doing my yoga, like stretches, you know, my cat, cows and upward dog, downward dog and child’s pose and laying on my back and wringing out my spine kind of side to side because the chiropractor can help me unlock it. But I really think it’s my job to keep it moving. Yes.
Otherwise I just have to go to the chiropractor every day. That’s not practical, but I started doing these things. You mentioned red light therapy. I think I’ve been playing too much pickleball and my hands kind of inflaming. So I use the red light while sitting there. When I finally got to sit down and I did my red light therapy. So getting back to doing the things that we should be doing all the time. And I love my job. I love helping people, but sometimes I have to actually put me first and take care of myself and people. If you’re listening and that resonates with you. You’ve got to take care of yourself. And that might be starting with the Diabetes Masterclass or the Thyroid Masterclass. Take care of yourself now.
You have been in this about 35 years, so we were probably in chiropractic school together in different places. Myself in Marietta, Georgia at life, I think. Parker they teach all kinds of adjustments from, you know, not just spine but all, you know, extremities and ears and all kinds of things. Yes, they did back then. I don’t know what they’re doing now, but back then, yes, we did head to toe. When was the last time you went to the chiropractor? So I actually fly out of, Texas to go a specific guy. His name is Doctor Mitch Malley in Davenport, Iowa. So I will fly to go see him.
I’ll spend a week with him and have him work on me for a week, and that usually is good for me for about six months. And then I’ll go back again and spend that dedicated time with him and his staff working on me. So, you know, I got to practice what I preach. I think Mitch Malley, isn’t he the one that was kind of famous for doing extremity adjusting or something? Yeah, he’s a guy. I’ve been adjusted by
10:35 — Functional medicine versus mainstream medicine
Dr. Mitch Malley. Yes. He’s excellent at one of the seminars. Yes. Never went to his office in Iowa, but. Well, I want to talk about the big difference between what you do and what medical doctors do. And if you could, I want you to open up a browser and do a search for define mainstream medicine, because it’d be fun to kind of pick this apart together. And I can read it off, but it’s more fun when we have the words in front of us. So define mainstream. I’m doing it right now myself. Okay. I gotta spell it right. And now, right now I’m getting this AI overview. But if I scroll down a little bit, I see the National Cancer Institute, which is a .gov. Do you see that?
Yep I do. Let’s click on that and look at their definition of mainstream medicine. Do you want to read it? A system in which medical doctors and other health care professionals such as nurses, pharmacists and therapists, treat symptoms and disease using drugs, radiation or surgery, also called allopathic medicine, biomedicine, conventional medicine, orthodox medicine and Western medicine. What’s your feeling when you read that definition? Well, they do use yes. It’s basically if you cut it out, burn it out, drug it out. That’s what they do. And I’m not saying there’s not a place for that. There is. But that is not what we’re looking for. We’re looking for the root cause, which is what makes a huge difference between your allopathic professional versus what we do.
We want to know the root cause. We want to, first of all, unveil and discover the root cause and treat the problem from a root cause place so that we can actually fix the problem. All these things that are done allopathically the drugs, the surgeries are not fixing the underlying root cause, which is why a lot of these problems will come back or they’re not ever totally, really addressed. Yeah. I think you when you were reading that, you slowed down when you read the words treat symptoms. Yes. And that’s the exact opposite of what we do. We might recognize the symptoms as some kind of indicator, but you know. And what’s it mean to find the cause? You know, we might look at someone has a kidney problem. Okay.
What’s the cause? Well, the cause is high blood pressure. Weight. But what caused the high blood pressure? You know, what is the underlying cause? And is that the big difference between functional medicine? It is a huge difference. It is the game changer. It is the it is a way that people can be free of disease. So that’s why I’m so passionate about it.
13:37 — Symptom relief, medications, and health messaging
And that’s why we have these free classes. Because I don’t think people hear that message. You know, when you’re watching TV, I mean, how many drug commercials come up in just a half hour? I think every, every break is a drug commercial. And so you’re getting plenty of information about all these drugs. And again, I’m not saying drugs are bad. There is a place in time for that. But for these chronic diseases that we’re talking about today, the diabetes, the thyroid problems, the things that you deal with, the gut problems, the drug is not going to fix that. You know, in 1995, I was out of chiropractic school, and I did my own little study watching TV. And it was exactly what you said.
There was at least one drug commercial every series. And there was, you know, 5 or 6 series of commercials per hour of TV. And, you know, using the very simple math, if we said there were five drug commercials per hour and the average American was watching the estimated 18 to 20 hours of TV per week, but if we use simple numbers and said only ten hours, that would be 50 drug commercials per week. And if you took a couple of weeks out of the year off and only watch TV for 50, not 52 weeks, that would be 2500 drug commercials per year. And if you watched for a decade, that’s 25,000 drug commercials.
But if you’re like me and have been watching TV for, you know, six decades, that’s 150,000 drug commercials using conservative numbers. Yep. And, you know, it’s no wonder why people don’t know how to spell relief. They say, how do you spell relief? Isn’t it Rolaids? Pretty sure that was a commercial. What is the nighttime? Sniffling, sneezy coffee, achy, stuffy head fever so you can rest. Medicine. Very catchy. You know, they make these all singing songs, and everyone on the drug commercial looks so happy and with their dog and with, you know, running through a field, they’re very clever. Plop, plop. This is what a relief it is. That’s what people want. They want relief, not cures. Right? Not really. They want cures. They want to get well.
But they’re sold on the concept of relief, which is a symptom based thinking. It’s a brainwashing that has to undone. And that’s what we’re here to Yes, I know the brain works on repetition. And like you just mentioned, all this repetition. Eventually the brain starts to think that that’s the truth. Yeah.

17:23 — Finding root causes before symptoms develop
So how do we get well? Well, finding the root cause And this is way before symptoms start. Because I think we all know when someone gets a diagnosis of diabetes, it doesn’t happen the day they’re diagnosed. It started happening 20 years ago. So making your health priority like you mentioned, we all have to be at a place where we think we’re worth it. And we think that we deserve the best in life. And We want to know how our bodies are working, or what is keeping our bodies from working the best that they can, and then being willing to make changes. And this is where it gets sticky, because everyone wants to be in their comfort zone. That’s why they call it a comfort zone.
But being willing to get out of their comfort zone and make the changes that help our bodies function optimally so
18:14 — Environmental chemicals and chronic illness
that’s what we’re looking for. Yeah. And what areas in our life will we be addressing? Well, everything obviously nutrition, nutrition, environment. I was just talking to someone just yesterday. And this person, you know, I always want to know okay, what are you around. What is in your environment. What are you being exposed to. And this person lived in middle America. Husband’s a farmer. Farming fields all around them. And I’m looking at their paperwork. I’m looking at their lives and looking at their health history. And a lot of the problems that they develop was because of being around all these farming chemicals. You know, your background looks like a field, so it is, but there’s no chemicals in the field behind me. Right.
And this person is and cancer, you know, talk about cancer in the family to practically every member, including people under 30. All have cancer in her family. And I’m just, you know, I’m just, like, shaking my head and it just makes me sick to my stomach to know that this person, if they would have just known that where they are living, is killing them and giving them the information to make the choice to get out of there. So they’re not they’re not being bombarded by these farming chemicals. And we did a toxin test on her. And yes, it lit up with all kinds of chemicals, all kinds of, of pesticides. And she had also been through cancer and her daughter had been through cancer.
And all these people are family, you know, all this cancer. And people just don’t know. People don’t know. And so when you start to have new knowledge, well, then that’s when you can make a choice and take action on a new decision so that you can have a different outcome. Yeah, yeah. The field behind me is an Aloe Vera Field. And I don’t think there’s any such thing as genetically modified aloe vera. Luckily, it doesn’t require fertilizers. It’s naturally resistant to pests, so it doesn’t need herbicides, fungicides and pesticides. It just grows. It needs water every now and then, but if not, it’ll drink itself. It’s an amazing, amazing food. Where is that picture? Where’s that picture taken? Just curious. Dominican Republic. Cool. Yeah.
But the most farming, I mean, the, the soils are, you know, nutrient depleted. So they’re adding fertilizers and they’re nutrient depleted because they’re spraying them with chemicals, and the chemicals kill all the microbes and worms and bugs that are in the soil that would be otherwise consuming things and pooping it out, making good, healthy soil. But they’re not there. They’re all dead now because we spray them with chemicals so the soil is dead. And regenerative farming is all of a sudden this new idea, it was traditionally just what happened. And now we have to learn it all over again and reverse the damage we’ve done. It’s crazy. So what’s going. Let’s talk about thyroid.
And this has been something that’s been coming up more and more when, you know, I when I got out of school, it seems like thyroid problems were just becoming apparent.
21:12 — Thyroid disease, Hashimoto’s, and childhood diabetes
And, you know, people were taking things like Synthroid and being put on that because their thyroid-stimulating hormone was, you know, not the right number or something like that. And now we’ve come a long ways, and we’re learning more and more about this, but there’s even more and more diagnoses even still. What’s causing so many thyroid problems? I think you’ve touched on it. You know, it is our environment. It is our food. Our food is not. You talk about farming. Our food gets ten applications of chemicals or fertilizers before it goes to market. And like you just mentioned, these farming is not what it was 100 years ago. It is genetically modified.
We know that there is a link between the use of glyphosate, which is Roundup, and the incidence of diabetes and autoimmune disease just skyrocketing through the roof because of the use of these chemicals. So it’s a combination of our environment. I mean, most thyroid problems are due to an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto’s, which is where the immune system is now. Instead of protecting someone, it’s actually attacking them, and it’s attacking the thyroid gland. And with the changes in our diet and our lifestyle, in our environment, we’re just seeing these problems happen more and more and more and happening unfortunately in younger and younger people. I’m dealing with kids who are diabetic now, which I didn’t do 20 years ago when I first started doing this.
But now it’s a regular thing to see kids who are diabetic, they’re overweight. Some of them are even obese. Some of them are developing breast tissue way too early. So a lot of these problems we’re seeing now.
23:18 — The 12 markers in a complete thyroid panel
And so we got to get this information to parents as well, so that they can make better choices for their kids. Yeah. When it comes to the thyroid, how do we properly diagnose it is you know, you have a thyroid issue so everyone gets the same treatment, or your thyroid issue is unique in this way, and this is how we know. And here are some of the changes we’re going to make specifically for you. So I think the biggest problem well, one of the bigger problems is that people are being underdiagnosed or being under tested. There are 12 markers that make up a complete thyroid panel. And like you mentioned, most people, they just have TSH run because the reason being is because your medical person.
Like that statement we just read, they are looking to see what medications you qualify for. They’re not looking beyond that. So if a marker doesn’t match up to a medication, they’re not going to run the marker. But most people don’t want more and more meds. They want to know why why they have a symptom, why they’re having a problem. So not being tested properly is a huge problem. We got to know now. Like I said, there’s 12 markers that make up a complete thyroid panel, but there are 24 patterns of thyroid dysfunction. Okay. So is the test a single blood test where you look at all the different markers or is it different forms of testing. Sure. So it’s looking at not just thyroid because this is a problem too.
Once someone is labeled with a thyroid problem, that’s all that’s being looked at. And so we’re missing do they have a blood sugar problem. Do they have a inflammation problem? Do they have an adrenal gland problem. do they have a gut problem. And they’re all going to have all these problems when your body develops a symptom, it’s because your body has run out of workarounds. Your body is very smart. If it were one problem, your body would be able to handle one problem, have a solution or workaround for that problem. But it’s when these many problems start to stack up and your body doesn’t have a workaround. That’s when these symptoms start to develop. So we got to look at everything.
25:19 — The thyroid’s connections to the gut, liver, and brain
the thyroid gland. It depends on the liver. It depends on the gut. It depends on the brain to have proper thyroid metabolism. And people don’t understand this. And this is why even if you have brain fog, well that can affect your thyroid function. If you have fatty liver, that can affect your thyroid function. If you have a leaky gut that can affect your thyroid function. So we have to look all over the place at all these things to make sure that these systems are working properly so that you can have proper thyroid metabolism. I got it. How much testing is done to figure these things out?
I start off with blood and urine, and then a toxin test is always very helpful because in what I’ve seen throughout many years of doing this, is that people who have a chronic disease and who have autoimmune disease are typically very poor, detoxifiers.
26:06 — Testing for mold, metals, and environmental toxins
So they will generally have toxins in their body. Yeah. Dr. Guerra, how do you measure toxins. So it’s a simple urine sample. It’s probably the easiest test someone will ever do. And that sample set off to the lab. And the toxins that we were looking for are mold, metals and environmental toxins. And when people see the results back there, shocked. You know, we’re talking things like arsenic, uranium in their body mold, which mold can cause a bad gut. Mold can affect the liver. Mold can cause cancer. And then environmental toxins, which disrupt all your hormones. Things, even as simple things that you use in your home, such as laundry detergent or toothpaste or mouthwash and pesticides.
So we have to be aware of the toxins that are in our home that we can definitely change. Make simple changes. Getting rid of plastics, things like this that will disrupt your hormones and cause inflammation. Raise your blood sugar and Bam! Now you have the diagnosis of diabetes or other diagnosis, or other problems. Well, how do we get rid of these toxins? So not just not remove them for our from our life, but how do we get them out of our body?
27:26 — Supporting the body’s detoxification pathways
Sure. So practicing things like red lights, or infrared sauna is something to consider. You know, we’re seeing all these infrared sauna places now popping up all over the place. They’re becoming quite popular. You can even get one for your home. You also got to make sure you’re having proper bowel movements. So people who are not having balance, you’re not getting rid of toxins. And then if your body has quite a bit of toxins, well then you’re going to need the help of someone, some professional who knows how to help your body detoxify and get rid of toxins. But even breathing, breathing can get rid of toxins. Yeah, obviously, you know, sweating and physical exercise could probably increase your metabolism and more sweat and you probably detoxify more.
How much do supplements play a role? I understand there’s things like, you know, spirulina is supposed to help get rid of mercury or something like that, you know, yes, there are certain supplements that you use. Yes. Various binders depending on what toxins someone may have. But yes, supplements are very important because we can’t get all of our nutrition through our food, because our food is well. Number one is compromised, but we just can’t get it all through food. We want to use food as a tool to, yes, give your body the nutrients that it needs in order to heal. But using supplements help speed up the process to give your body the nutrients that we can’t get from food so that your body can heal and can function better.
[The supplied transcript contains a gap from approximately 28:50 to 29:49.]
29:49 — The dangers of unsupervised cleanses
Yeah, I always like to caution people when they’re, you know, taking certain things to detoxify, or especially if they’re trying to do parasite cleanses or something like that, to get guidance from a health care professional. Hopefully someone that does functional medicine and can give you good guidance in that particular area. The last thing we want to do is take something that’s harsh and wipe out our gut. Flora. Yes, and you got to have a healthy liver. I think people don’t realize there are three phases of detox, and if any of those three phases aren’t working, you’re not going to detox.
And if you start taking things that releases all these toxins, your bloodstream, but they don’t have a way out, you’re going to cause a world of hurt and much bigger problems. So yes, you always want guidance of someone who has the knowledge, who has successfully helped other people before trying all these cleanses that are out there on the internet, because you may not get results that you want, and you probably may even cause more problems. You know, it’s been a while since I studied the phases of detoxification. If I remember, I think the first one was pretty easy. I think it was just pooping. Correct. So we got to be able to move our bowels.
and some people, especially if they have a thyroid problem they may not have, regular bowel movement. So you know all these problems that people present with, we almost have to work on all of them all at the same time.
31:14 — Personalized testing, nutrition, and supplements
it’s having someone who can, first of all, order the correct tests, which isn’t happening much, and then can interpret the tests and then can create a specific plan just for you. That’s where I think traditional medicine fails as well. It’s because everyone’s doing the same thing. When I talk to a diabetic, I already know what drugs they’re on, even though I ask them to provide a list, already know what it is because it’s all the same thing. Same thing with thyroid people. They’re on the same thing. And so the cookie cutter approach just doesn’t work. Yeah. So I know a lot of the getting, well, a lot of your recommendations when you’re coaching someone, you’re I know you’re giving nutrition recommendations and they’re probably different for each person I’m guessing.
Yep. Because what’s good for me isn’t good for you. Or maybe it is, but probably not. How do you figure those things out? Right. We’re not going to present the same problems. I’ve never seen two labs come back the same. And so someone’s list of problems, even though they may be in the same family, will be totally different because our bodies are different. The challenges or roadblocks that your body has may not be the same that I have. And so that’s why running the test to know exactly what the problems are, what the roadblocks are. But then having a specific roadmap for each individual is so very important. And that’s why this works. And it works very well.
And it works very quickly because we’re not playing whack a mole and guessing, which is what most people are doing. They’re just going with the latest fad, going with the latest diet, going with the latest whatever, and, you know, crossing their fingers, hoping that it will work. But because they don’t ever know the true problem or root cause, it’s a lot of times the trial fails and then they get frustrated. Throw that supplement in the cabinet. You know, check off that you did the paleo diet or whatever diet and then they go on to the next thing. Yeah. So a lot of the getting well done is just eating the right foods, which doesn’t cost money. It’s just changing from one thing to another. That’s right.
And that’s where we help people too, because, you know, people don’t realize that there’s a healthy version of practically everything you want. Would that be ice cream or whatever it is, whatever it is that you want, there’s a healthy version, there’s a better version, there’s a less toxic version. But a lot of people don’t know. They don’t realize that that’s the case. And so that’s where we help people as well. How’d you get into this? What got your interest in things natural?
33:37 — How Dr. Guerra discovered functional medicine
Sure. I mean, when I start out as a chiropractor, you know, doing the traditional chiropractic thing and just listening to patients and hearing their frustration and seeing the list of meds that they’re on as a chiropractor, of course, I wasn’t addressing, you know, their diabetes at that point in time. But, you know, as I just saw the population and their symptoms now came out as back pain or sciatica or carpal tunnel or whatever, you know, neck pain. It just it just got me curious to there’s got to be something else out there that can help people instead of these people just racking up all these medications. And that’s what got me searching. And that’s how I got led to functional medicine and functional endocrinology. And it just made sense.
It’s it still was it the same kind of philosophy of finding the root cause, as in as chiropractic is? And when I start seeing working with people and seeing results, it’s like, wow, people need to know about this. And, you know, when I was when I first started doing it, even my colleagues would laugh at me saying, what are you talking about? You can reverse Type 2 diabetes. Never heard that. So when my colleagues are also, you know, don’t know about it. Well, I certainly the general population doesn’t know about it. And that’s when we started doing presentations and things like this to get the word out. Yeah. Similar to what you experienced.
You know, I would see patients coming in and, you know, some of them were aged a lot more than they should have been. And, you know, what’s the difference between this person and that person? And yeah, genetics but lifestyle. And, you know, we need to make some lifestyle changes. And it probably for me it probably began with my patients and teaching them stretches. Everyone got an adjustment followed by stretches to help maintain the improved function because they would keep on coming back with the same problem again and again and again. It’s like, well, let’s make some changes. And eventually it was nutritional changes and other lifestyle changes. Well, what’s interfering with your sleep? This was interesting too. I remember when I realized that certain pain patterns were emotionally connected.
You know, you flare up every time you’re under a whole lot of stress and you know what’s going on in your life. Why is your sciatic so bad right now? What’s going on right now? Oh, you’re going through a divorce, you know, imagine that, that things are worse when you’re having emotional problems. So we started addressing more nutrition, the exercise, the rest, and the mental thinking and what’s going on in your brain and started getting better results. So we talked about food. And one of the things I saw in your bio was the target specific nutrition.
36:35 — Protein, meal planning, hydration, and sleep
Or maybe it’s targeted supplements. Can you tell me about that? Sure. Our body needs certain elements in order to function. I know that sounds so simple. Just like water. I mean, we all need to drink water. Most of us don’t drink enough water. And so making sure that we’re getting a diet of protein, vegetables, healthy fat to make sure that we are. We’re setting up our day so we get those things. I think that’s where a lot of people fail is, you know, we’re also busy. We don’t plan. We don’t. And so then that’s when you’re driving through the drive through or just, you know, grabbing something. But you got a plan. You got a plan your week. You got a plan.
Like, for me, I know what I’m going to eat today. It’s like I don’t have to make a decision. I already know what I’m going to have because it’s in the refrigerator because I made it over the weekend. So just making sure that you have food available and have food available, like at my desk, I have some beef sticks here. I have some nuts here. So I’m always surrounded by good, quality food that will, you know, allow me to sit here all day long and speak to people like you and speak to patience, because we all know sitting as the new smoking.
So we got to make sure that we set our body up for success and give our body what it needs in order to perform and keep our brains healthy and sleep. I don’t think people talk about sleep enough either. I mean, sleep is what your body deals and your brain heals, so you got to protect your sleep. Got to make sure that you have a regimen so that you can sleep well. have a I have grounding sheets. So hopefully I’m healing at night to while my body is sleeping. But you know, making sure the room is dark, making sure the temperature is as appropriate so you can have a deep sleep.
You know, these simple things that I don’t think people are aware of, not, you know, certainly not falling asleep with your iPad because that’s just depleting your melatonin and making sleep much more difficult. But just doing simple things, simple things that each of us can do to make sure that our bodies have the chance to heal, regenerate, and function the best.
38:40 — Sleep temperature, grounding, and electrolytes
Yeah, well, you said a lot there and all these things are popping up first. What’s the right temperature for sleep for you? 68 degrees. Oh my goodness. Wow. Yeah. Can you see out the windows at 60 or in Florida. You wouldn’t be able to see out the window. No my my yeah my my. When my windows get start to have all the condensation on the outside. But no the sign says 68 degrees. Oh, boy. I’m going to have to present this to my wife. I don’t know if we’ll be able to do it. We’ve been at 76. Oh my goodness. Yes. Okay. You talked about grounding mats. And you know, for people wondering what the heck is a grounding mat.
I can explain it by telling you the importance of it here in our office when we’re working in the warehouse and we have dehumidifiers running because we have a big freezer for our, you know, frozen aloe and stuff like that. So we have to try to keep this environment dry, which makes more static electricity. And we have a certain stretch wrap machine. And if we’re using that the stretch wrap makes static. And when we go to push the button to start the machine, we’ll get almost electrocuted. You know that when you touch metal and you see that zap and you feel it and you go, wow. And you get afraid to touch the machine unless you’re standing on a grounding mat.
Because if you’re on a grounding mat with, you know, you have to have your shoes off so that, you know, the rubber would cause interference, it would block the discharge that happens when you’re on a grounding mat. A grounding mat is connected to the Earth, and you plug it into the grounding of your wall outlet so that you know, through a wire, you’re actually connected to the actual Earth. And now we can touch whatever we want and we don’t get electrocuted. So it’s a way of discharging these electrical charges that could be acting as free radicals doing damage in your body. There was another thing you mentioned that was what was it? I lost it. You mentioned so many different things in there.
I was like, oh, that’s good, that’s good, that’s good. I should have made notes. Yes. I mean, like, like I said, water and making sure you have electrolytes in your water. You’re in Florida. You’re constantly losing fluid, even though you’re not outside sweating, you’re still losing fluid. But we need electrolytes. Our bodies are electrical beings. You know that. That’s why the grounding mat is so effective as well. We are we are electrical beings and making sure that because we’re not outside, we’re all inside. So, you know, when I was a kid, I would run around outside barefoot. So we didn’t need mats back then, but now inside, we need these things to simulate the electrical current from the earth. So. Yeah.
Well, you were talking about drinking water, and I always have my, you know, I can drink to that for sure. I like to have something in it that’s interesting, which I happen to be out of right now. We make a concentrated, fresh squeezed ginger with organic lemon juice, and I like to put a little Stevia in it. And that’s just something we’ll splash that concentrate in the water, and it makes me want to drink a lot more water. You’re making me thirsty right now. Yeah, yeah. So we keep a bottle of that in a refrigerator and, you know, have to replenish it about every week or so. And we, you know, you just crave it. So it makes you consume a lot of water. Oh, there was one other thing.
And then, oh, it was a word that you used that for me.
42:22 — Better restaurant choices and emergency snacks
It was like, what’s that? What is a drive through now? I haven’t been through a drive through in years. And you talked about, you know, what you’re going to eat. It’s. I don’t even like going. I mean, it’s nice to go out to eat, but there’s the part of it where you go. Yeah, but then we have to eat that food. You know, it’s nice to go out with someone and spend time and be served and, and the food might even taste good. But there’s something that’s just hard about eating it, because you know that this is not something you would actually make in your own home. Now, there are restaurants where you can get real food and farm to table type places, but there’s so few and far between.
That’s right. And I like to go out to eat. But one thing I do to create better habits. Because when we all sit down a restaurant, sometimes we’re so famished, we just want to order everything that we see is. And sometimes we make bad choices. I will typically always look at the menu before I go, so I can make a better decision before I’m sitting there at the restaurant and just want to just eat everything that I see. So that’s a practice that I do as well to check out the restaurant too, if I’ve never been to it, but so I know. Have a good idea. Okay, this is what I’m going to get and I’m going to stick with my decision. Yeah.
Another thing you did is you mentioned my favorite protein bar meat sticks. It’s a great thing to keep around because when you, you know, if you start getting hungry and you know, a good source of healthy real food protein, and if you can have a grass fed dried beef, it’s everything you need. And it’s very satisfying. So you’re less likely to hit the drive through on your way home or order something and have it delivered to your door. It’s just a way to have that emergency snack ready, something good and safe to eat. So I think we’re probably very similar when it comes to foods. A lot of my following won’t eat animal foods, and that’s okay too if that’s what works for you.
There’s a and fruits and vegetables or they’ve got some very important nutrients that we want to make sure we’re getting directly or by the things that we eat that have consumed them already. You know, if you’re having animal foods, hopefully it’s pastured grass fed, eating the real things that it was originally meant to eat. 45:31 — Diabetes and thyroid support communities
for people wanting to find out more. What is the best source you mentioned The Facebook group. Yeah, that is the best source, because that’s not only where we hold our masterclasses, but we got tons of information on these group pages. Again, the diabetes one is called the end of two diabetes now. And I’ll make sure that you get a link that does work properly. And then the thyroid one is called unbroken. So a lot of women are told that they’re broken, that the problems that they are experiencing are in their head. So we named the group unbroken women Overcoming low thyroid symptoms. So we’ll have I’ll have teachings. I do a weekly teaching each and every week.
I’ll do little snippets and reels to give people little, little pieces of information that they can also take away. and I think that my most favorite on these Facebook pages are patient spotlights is when our patients talk, it’s when the people tell you their, their experience of things that they were suffering with.
And now after putting in the time and making themselves first and putting in the work to get their body to heal after experiencing problems for, you know, some, some of these people decades that the body was able to heal in just months, which is just amazing when you think about it, if someone’s been suffering with a problem for 30 years, 40 years, but they’ve been on meds for that long and their bodies can turn around within just a few months, that’s just to me, it’s still amazing. The body can respond that quickly, but it does that because we find the root cause we’re not playing whack-a-mole.
We know exactly what needs to be addressed, and then we address them and put the body in the right direction and take out the roadblocks all the way so the body can function. Yeah. It’s beautiful. I just diagnosed the Facebook problem. Okay. I switched from my business profile to my personal profile. Then I did a search for unbroken. And here it is. Unbroken women overcoming low thyroid private group with over 95,000 members. Yes,
47:39 — Fifteen-minute appointments and insurance limitations
people want solutions that I think that’s where, talking to people all day long is that they’re not giving a solution. Their 15 minute appointment is, hello, let’s change your meds. Let’s do this and I’ll see you next time. It’s just, you know, it’s just I had one patient tell me one time that there was an actual sign in the doctor’s office that your appointment end at the 15 minute mark. Oh, and, you know, 15 minutes, 15 minutes is just. Is not enough time to talk about the problems and you know what can be done? It’s only enough time to change the meds. Or at another med say goodbye. That’s it. You know, I’ll never forget when I was doing my internship as a chiropractor.
I shouldn’t have even said that much. Well, no, it’s okay, because I’ve. I’ve. I actually spread it out among a couple different locations. But one of the doctors I was doing my internship for, I spent about ten minutes with a patient. And when I came out, you know, why are you spending so much time in there? Get them in, get them out, I said. What do you mean? They said. He said, you know how much we get for that visit. He said, $6. Get them in, get them out because they were on this. I said, why are you even on that insurance plan? I hate to say the answer was because they might get in a car accident. Okay, this is a horrible way to do business.
You know, your doctors are probably not spending enough time with you because they’re not being compensated properly and the system is rigged and it’s against you, and it’s far better to, you know, get some real help. And maybe even if you have to pay out of your own pocket for it. Yeah. I don’t, you know, to pull back the curtain a little bit since you opened up the insurance discussion, people always ask, why wouldn’t my doctor order these labs? Because they can’t. Because if they were to do that, the insurance company would get upset at them and actually kick them out of the plan. and, you know, if they’re in an insurance model, their office is set up with the insurance model. They can’t afford to do that.
They can’t afford to get kicked out of Blue Cross or UnitedHealthCare or in these big plans, because then it’s going to affect their income. And so your doctor is making business decisions instead of patient centered decisions, which, you know, they’re in a catch 22. I feel bad for them. That’s why we don’t deal with insurance because of that that reason. So we can have the freedom to make decisions that is right for the person. And so you’re exactly right. The system is rigged.
50:21 — “Normal” versus optimal laboratory ranges
And I think another thing people don’t know, I, I talk about this in the masterclass, but did you realize that labs calculate the reference range, sometimes referred to as the normal range, based on the people who go into the lab and, you know, the people crowding out the labs? They’re not the 20 year olds in the labs. It’s a sick population. But this is what you’re being compared to. And the reason they’re getting their labs done. That’s right. So it’s scary. So again, once you have knowledge, you get to see okay, this is why this is happening. This is why my doctor can only spend 15 minutes with me. This is why I’m being told that all my labs look normal.
Because I’m being compared to all the people in Broward County in Florida. I don’t want to be average. I want to be optimal. That’s right. Exactly. And you must have known that I’m in Broward County, Florida. I just guessed.
51:22 — The power of words, mindset, and meditation
That was a that was a fine guess. You know, this is kind of an unrelated question, but not really, because it probably has something to do with why you are here even now. And I like to refer to these as power words that may have been spoken into your life. Has anyone ever said anything that really stuck with you in your life that you just applied to things? I’m going to give a few examples. In school, you know, we were told, you know, you never know how far reaching something you say, think or do can affect the lives of millions tomorrow. And I probably misquoted that. But that was by B.J. Palmer after one of those chiropractic inspirational events, there was a speaker. Do you know doctor Rob Schiffman?
No, I’ve not heard of that person. Well, he was he was speaking to the chiropractors and he would see, you know, over a thousand patients a week. And the and I get it. I know how he did it because he was in tune. He was always in the right place, doing the right thing at the exact right moment in time. And at this time, I was kind of having my own issues as a new chiropractor. This is going back, you know, 30 something years and afterwards, you know, how, like when the speaker is up on the stage and everyone wants to kind of talk to them? And I was going through my own, you know. Identify struggles.
You know, my chiropractor and my a minister after chiropractic school, I was going to Bible college and things like that. And I was just kind of confused and how and who to be. And I, I said, Doctor Schiffman, I struggle with and he said he pointed at me. He said, stop struggling. And he went on to the next person. His answer was that quick and that accurate. And I’ve applied it to so much stuff since then. That was a life changing moment for me. What are some power words that were spoken into your life? That concept, and I’m not going to say a specific word, but that concept, like you just mentioned, words are so powerful. You have to choose word and words about yourself.
If you say, I’m struggling, well then guess what the universe is going to give you. It’s going to give you more struggle. But if you say, I am, I am prosperous, I am strong, I am healthy. I guess what the universe is going to give you is going to give you just that. So I, your words and your thoughts have more power than what I think people realize. and so this is why we have to guard our thoughts and guard our words so very carefully. Because if you didn’t know, 98% of our thoughts are negative. And I struggle with this too, and I have to make sure that I’m setting myself up for a positive day and thinking positive thoughts.
I have now become a meditator, which I never thought I could ever do. I follow Doctor Joe Dispenza. I don’t know if you heard of him, he’s a chiropractor, but now he’s a huge influence in the meditation community. But I went to one of his seven day meditation retreats, which I would have never thought I’d go through a seven day meditation retreat, and we meditate. One of us, one of his meditations, was a five hour meditation, started a 4 a.m., ended at 9 a.m. and you know, that time went by. It seemed like it went by, like at the snap of a finger. Because, you know, when you’re in the place where you get your mind behind what you want. You get your mind in agreement with what you want.
you tell the universe, God, whoever that is, what you want. Well, then all of a sudden things start to line up, an opportunity start to come. And for those people out there, I know this is a health talk. If you want better health, well, then you got to start thinking that way. You have to think and become that person now. And on top of that, be grateful. And then things will start to change. Things will start to shift, things will come. You’ll start to get information. You’ll start to meet other people. You start to to be presented with people like you and who can help show you the way out of your problem.
So I think this has been probably the most powerful thing recently is I’ve known this, but now I’m really focusing on it. I seen one doctor’s written daily meditation, and I would imagine it probably grew over time, but by the time I saw it, it was several paragraphs and it said things in it like, you know, I am healthy because I make healthy choices. I take care of myself so that I can help other people. And it would just go on and on and on about all of those things that were important to him and becoming that person as it was written. And he would he would read it and consider those things every day.
And so for him, it was, you know, it wasn’t a just it wasn’t a meditation. It was a structured meditation. I’m actually reading it, memorizing it, and then that becomes who I am. I think that’s really cool thing. And I five hour meditation. Wow. Yeah. And you know, all these professional athletes, they have won the championship before it even happened because they saw it in their mind and they saw it happen in their mind, and they saw them make that winning goal or, you know, jump shot or whatever or the, you know, hitting the making the eagle putt or whatever it was, they saw it before it even happened. So we can do the same thing making the eagle putt. That would be something, making par something for me to.
I’m still holding on to that hole in one that’s going to it’s coming. I missed it by about a foot one time. Oh wow. I was I was in the I was in the best golf tournament ever. It was it was someone’s, you know, before they got married kind of thing. So instead of having a wild party, we all went golfing. And the funny thing is, every hole had a prize. And for the one closest to the pin on a par three, I dropped it about a foot from the hole. And that was the closest I ever came. The funny thing was, the prize was one of his trophies that he had earned growing up. So it was his, you know, wife-to-be’s way of getting rid of all of his.
That’s a great idea. All things she didn’t want in the house, the deer head.
